How to paint a rug
Painting a rug is the easiest and cheapest way to transform it. You just need a bit of fabric paint and a plain rug. It really doesn’t get any easier (or cheaper!)
A rug can completely transform a room. It can give your decor that extra coziness and tie the whole room together. The problem is that rugs can be quite pricey. Today I’m going to show you how to paint a rug and transform a plain rug into something fresh and different very, very cheaply.
Before deciding on a rug, you really have to consider the size. Choose a rug too small and you’ll inmediately make the room look smaller. For instance, if you’re looking for a rug for your living room, you should choose one big enough so that at least the front legs of the furniture rest on it. If you need a rug for your dining room, make sure all the chairs fit on it, etc. There are these little ‘rules’ for every room that will help you choose the perfect size.
The problem is that big rugs are normally quite expensive (no surprise there!), especially if youre trying to find a rug with a pattern or an original design instead of being just plain. Plain rugs are cheaper but very often less atractive aswell so, how can you get the perfect size, perfect design rug when you’re styling your home on a budget? Well, by painting it yourself, obviously 😉
DIY PAINTED RUG FOR MY HALL
Room by room I’m changing my home decor and right now I’m in the middle of my hall makeover and, although at first I didn’t think of putting a rug in there, after seeing how fabulous my diy accent wall looks and how awful the old floor looks next to it, I changed my mind. I needed a long black and white rug with a graphic pattern that would compliment the accent wall. Just like these:
Left: Domino | Right: Miss Moss
I found this solid white rug in a second hand shop for just $5. Perfect size, perfect color, great! I absolutely love buying second hand stuff. It’s so affordable and eco-friendly.
I just needed to come up with a pattern and get down to work. I finished the job in a couple of hours. Once it’s finished and dry you can put it in the washing machine and the paint won´t wash out. I love it! Here’s a video to show you how to paint a rug step by step. It’s soooo easy, really!
The pattern is simple, just what my hall needed – vertical lines that will draw the eye to the diy accent wall and the photo of Mick I hung on it as the main focal point. I’ve seen what it looks like in the hall and it’s brilliant! Can’t wait to show you the full hall makeover.
What about you? Have you ever painted a rug?
